Using Resource Groups
This page explains how to create and manage resource groups, and how to choose which resource group a resource belongs to. For an overview of how resource groups and allocations relate, see Resource Groups & Allocations.
Navigation
In the sidebar, click Resource Groups. The page lists the resource groups you own and the ones shared with you, with each group's Allocation, number of Resources, and how many are Active or Failed.
Use Group by to switch between Owner (the default, split into Owned by me and Shared with me) and Allocation, and the Ownership filter to narrow the list.
Creating a resource group
- On the Resource Groups page, click Add resource group.
- Enter a Name. Use letters, numbers, hyphens, and underscores only (up to 63 characters). Names must be unique among your own resource groups; another user can own a resource group with the same name.
- Select an Allocation. The list shows the allocations shared with you. Allocations that have no budget, are over budget, or are not rated in USD are shown but cannot be selected.
- Click Create.
You need Use or Admin access to the allocation. If no allocations appear, ask an organization admin to share one with a group you belong to.
Creating a resource group from a resource form
You don't have to leave a create form to make a resource group. In the Resource Group field, choose + Create new resource group, enter a name, pick an allocation, and click Create and select. If you don't have any resource groups yet, this panel opens automatically.
Choosing a resource group for a resource
Every create or edit form for a billable resource has a Resource Group field. The dropdown lists the resource groups you can use whose allocation can fund that type of resource, along with each group's allocation and current usage.
- Resource groups whose allocation has no budget, is over budget, or is not rated in USD appear greyed out with the reason, and cannot be selected.
- Some allocations are restricted to specific resource types (for example, only AWS, or only AI). Resource groups on those allocations only appear for matching resources.
- Once selected, the Allocation below the field shows which allocation will pay and how much of its budget is used. The allocation is set on the resource group; to change it, pick another resource group or change the group's allocation.
A resource must have a resource group before it can start. A resource without one shows Required to start on its details page.
Changing the resource group of an existing resource
Only the resource's owner can change its resource group, and only while the resource is off (clusters powered off, storage not provisioned). Users you've shared the resource with can still edit its other settings.
Viewing a resource group
Click a resource group's name to open its details page.
- Allocation — the allocation that currently funds the group, with its Allowed resource types and Usage bar.
- Allocation history — past allocations and the date each one stopped funding the group. The platform uses this history to charge every cost to the allocation that was active when the cost was incurred. See Changing a resource group's allocation.
- Resources — every resource in the group, with its type, owner, status, and region. You can filter by type, status, provider, and region.
If the allocation doesn't allow one of the resources in the group (for example, after an admin restricts its resource types), a banner lists how many resources can't be provisioned and the row shows not allowed. Move those resources to another resource group.
Moving a resource to another resource group
- On the resource group's details page, open the resource's row menu and click Move to resource group….
- Select the target resource group, or create a new one.
- Click Move.
A resource can only be moved while it is off. The resource's owner or an admin of the source resource group can move it. When you move someone else's resource, the target must be a resource group the owner can also use.
Removing a resource from a resource group
Open the resource's row menu and click Remove from resource group. The resource keeps its configuration but has no resource group, so it cannot start until its owner assigns one. Like moving, this only works while the resource is off. The owner can always remove their own resource, even after losing access to the group.
Sharing a resource group
Share a resource group so other users can add their own resources to it.
- Open the resource group's row or header menu and click Manage Access.
- Grant a group, or the whole Organization, one of these levels:
- Use — open the group, see its resources, select it when creating resources, and move or remove their own resources.
- Admin — everything in Use, plus share the group, change its allocation, delete it, and move or remove anyone's resources.
- Click Save Access.
The resource group's owner and organization admins always have full control.
Changing a resource group's allocation
- Open the resource group's menu and click Edit Allocation.
- Select the new allocation and click Update.
You can change a resource group's allocation at any time, including while its resources are running. You need Admin on the resource group and Use or Admin on the new allocation, and the new allocation must have budget available.
Resources stay in the group; only the allocation that pays for them changes. The previous allocation is added to the group's Allocation history with the date it stopped funding the group, and that history decides where each cost is charged:
- Costs incurred before the change are charged to the previous allocation.
- Costs incurred after the change are charged to the new allocation.
This holds even for cloud invoices that arrive hours or days after the usage, and when billing data is reprocessed later, because each charge is matched by the time it was incurred, not the time it was imported. Changing the allocation never moves costs that have already been charged.
Deleting a resource group
Open the resource group's menu and click Delete, then confirm. You can only delete a resource group that has no resources: move, remove, or delete its resources first. Deleting a resource group does not delete its billing history.
Auto-managed resource groups
Organizations that recently switched from the legacy system may have resource groups marked Auto-managed. These were created automatically from groups. Once your organization is on the flexible allocation system, they behave like any other resource group.
