# Troubleshooting Resource Groups

This page lists common billing messages on organizations that use the flexible allocation system, what they mean, and how to resolve them.

## "A resource group is required"

**Message:** *A resource group is required: this organization bills through resource groups, so a group alone cannot select where a resource bills.*

**Cause:** The request named a group but no resource group. This usually comes from an older script or API call.

**Fix:** Select a **Resource Group** on the form, or pass a resource group in the API request.

## "… has no resource group. Assign one before starting it."

**Cause:** The resource was created before your organization switched systems, or it was removed from its resource group.

**Fix:** As the resource's owner, edit the resource and pick a **Resource Group**, then start it.

## "No allocations are shared with you"

**Cause:** You can't create a resource group because no allocation is shared with any group you're in.

**Fix:** Ask an organization admin to share an allocation with one of your groups at the **Use** level.

## "Allocation … has no budget set"

**Message:** *Allocation X has no budget set. Please contact your administrator to set the allocation.*

**Cause:** The allocation's Total is 0. A budget of 0 blocks new work; it does not mean unlimited.

**Fix:** Ask an organization admin to set the allocation's Total.

## "You have exceeded the budget of allocation …"

**Cause:** The allocation passed a threshold that freezes new work, so new resources, starts, and moves onto the allocation are refused. Running resources are not affected by a freeze.

**Fix:** Ask an organization admin to raise the allocation's Total, or use a resource group on a different allocation.

## "Resource group … cannot fund … resources"

**Message:** *Resource group X cannot fund aws resources: its allocation Y does not allow them.*

**Cause:** The allocation behind the resource group is restricted to other resource types.

**Fix:** Choose a resource group whose allocation allows this type of resource, or ask an admin to change the allocation's **Allowed resource types**.

## "Allocation … is not rated in USD"

**Cause:** The allocation uses a custom consumption unit. Cloud resources are billed in dollars, so they can only use USD-rated allocations.

**Fix:** Choose a resource group on a USD-rated allocation.

## "You no longer have access to resource group …"

**Cause:** The resource group was unshared from you after you assigned it. The resource keeps billing there until you change it.

**Fix:** Pick another resource group on the resource, or ask the resource group's owner to share it with you again.

## "… bills an allocation that no longer exists"

**Cause:** The resource group's allocation was deleted, so the platform refuses to start its resources rather than bill nothing.

**Fix:** An admin of the resource group can [change its allocation](/docs/resource-groups/using-resource-groups#changing-a-resource-groups-allocation), or you can move the resource to another resource group.

## "Only resources that are off can leave their resource group"

**Cause:** You tried to move or remove a running resource.

**Fix:** Stop the cluster or deprovision the storage, then move or remove it.

## "Cannot delete a resource group with assigned resources"

**Fix:** Move, remove, or delete the group's resources first, then delete the resource group.

## "… names a resource group for each of …"

**Cause:** Two users have shared resource groups with the same name with you, and the request didn't say which owner's you meant.

**Fix:** Open the one you want from the **Resource Groups** page, or ask one of the owners to rename theirs. Your own resource group always wins over a shared one with the same name.
